European Union (EU) and Sweden support resilience of vulnerable groups in Yemen.
The EU and Sweden have given over US$49 million to implement the third phase of their joint project in Yemen that could aid up to 850,000 people. The program aims to improve the self-reliance of those experiencing hardship in communities due to the nation’s internal conflict and continuing economic challenges, with special attention to women, youth, those without livelihoods, among others. The initiative, that also addresses climate adaptation and food security of the beneficiaries, is jointly carried out by the United Nations Development Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the International Labour Organization and the World Food Programme. The European Union is a recipient of four Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism, two Shining World Leadership Awards for Peace, and a Shining World Leadership Award for Earth Protection; as well as a laureate of two Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism and Shining World Leadership Awards for Compassion, Unconditional World Care and True Caring. Sponge bleaching observed amid rapidly warming Tasmanian waters in Australia.
In a new study, scientists from the University of Tasmania’s Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) have revealed that there has been an unprecedented finding of bleached sponges in the “twilight zone” between the shallow and deep ocean off Tasmania’s eastern coast. Sponges, normally reddish-purple in color, play a key role in providing structural habitat and converting nutrients from seawater into material that feeds reef production. Alarmingly, this region was plagued by heatwaves between 2015 and 2018, amid waters that are warming at almost four times the worldwide average. According to the research, global-warming induced marine heatwaves can have significant impacts on ecosystems, including organism bleaching and localized die-offs. Dr. Neville Barrett, the study’s co-author and Associate Professor at IMAS, warned that if warming continues, it could threaten the region’s diverse and unique species. And, of course, the compassionate plant-based way is the key to all this. Today, I would like to offer a tip on how you can teach your children to fold t-shirts quickly. First, take a piece of cardboard and cut it to the size of the shirt. Divide the cardboard into three regions, one larger area in the middle for the body of the shirt, and two smaller sections on the sides for each of the sleeves. Next, mark the sections and make two longitudinal cuts at the bottom half of the cardboard to separate the three areas. Set the shirt on the cardboard and fold the left side to the middle, the right side to the middle and lastly, the bottom up. President of Slovak Republic appeals to Russian military.
Her Excellency Zuzana Čaputová, the President of the Slovak Republic, recently issued a message via YouTube to Russian soldiers and commanders, urging them to withdraw from Ukraine. In the video, Her Excellency speaks in Russian and refers to the horrific violence inflicted upon the people of that nation, mentioning several cases of women and children who were killed and or raped or both. She states, “Russian soldiers, commanders, all concerned, if you are still capable of feeling any vestige of humanity in yourself, bring it back to life and end this terrible war.” Our praises, Your Excellency Zuzana Čaputová, for standing with the peaceful Ukrainian people in their desperate time of need. Mobile health services assist underserved individuals in western Canada.
The Alex Community Health Centre in Calgary, Alberta, recently launched a specialized mobile health unit to increase homeless people’s access to mental health and addiction treatment. Staffed with a peer support liaison and a nurse practitioner, the Alex Mobile Care Clinic bus is being funded by the Canadian telecommunications company TELUS’ Our Health for Good clinic program, to offer free assistance in areas including primary healthcare, women’s health services, mental wellness support, and substance abuse counseling. TELUS has allocated over US$9 million through 2025, to sustain the operation of 22 mobile clinics across Canada. In 2021, popular media personality Richa Anirudh started the Jamghat Pathshala, or the mini school, in New Delhi, India. Many of the youngsters attending the outdoor school dropped out of regular education due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and have not returned because of financial constraints. Every morning, six days a week, the children line the pavement with floor mats and set up the chalkboards followed by a prayer before commencing class. The keen students are divided into three groups according to their age and taught by Ms. Anirudh, two teachers and volunteers. Subjects include English, Hindi, mathematics, communication skills, behavioral science, health and hygiene. Richa’s objective for the bright students is for them to eventually enroll in regular schools. Well done, Richa Anirudh and team, for your wonderful noble work. Patrik Baboumian, a vegan strongman from Germany, recently unveiled a fundraising campaign to create a video game with the goal to “give a voice to the voiceless” and inspire compassion towards people, both animal and human. The EARTHRAISER – GAIA’S WISH game will feature a main superhero character who liberates and defends animal-persons of all species. Initially, he plans to raise €250,000, that would fund the creation of a 30-minute playable demo, which will later become a full-length video game for the PC, PlayStation and XBOX. Scientists decode manatee-people communication.
Marine biologist Dr. Beth Brady has spent over 13 years studying the manatee-people, giant, yet gentle, herbivorous marine mammals also known as sea cow-persons. Dr. Brady and her team have spent seven years recording and analyzing the vocalizations of the solitary and shy Florida, USA, manatee-people, as they play, graze on seagrass, and nurse their young. The researchers believe that the mammals use the vocal folds in their throats to “talk to each other” and not to echolocate like dolphin-people. The vocalizations are of three distinct categories that correspond with social play, distress, or interaction between a mother and her calf. Researchers are hopeful the new information on manatee-folk communication will not only help with monitoring and protecting them but also uncover if there is a universal manatee language.
