In mid-April, Sri Lanka received 11,000 metric tons of rice that were shipped from India via local rice traders to help its neighbor who is experiencing severe food shortages. This is in addition to the 16,000 metric tons of rice that Sri Lanka received from India the week before. India has compassionately agreed to provide a US$1 billion credit line to provide relief to Sri Lanka for purchasing essential items, including food, medicine and fuel, with the plan to ship a total of 300,000 metric tons of rice in the next few months. New study explains the phenomenon behind “electron precipitation” in Earth’s atmosphere.
A recently published paper by researchers from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), USA, showed that very fast electrons are coming to Earth from outer space more frequently than we had originally thought. Two giant radiation belts, known as the Van Allen belts, surround the planet and are known to trap energized particles that originate from the Sun. Certain waves from solar storms can cause electrons in these belts to spill into the lower atmosphere. The study used two small satellites built and operated by UCLA students, combined with data from a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) spacecraft. The researchers will continue to study electron precipitation behavior to help protect people and machines, such as astronauts and satellites, that can be negatively affected by them. Market gardeners in Senegal to benefit from solar water pumps.
In the area of Khor Bango, adjacent to Saint-Louis city in Senegal, the German Agency for International Development Cooperation (GIZ) is funding the installation of a solar-powered system that can pump 2,000 cubic meters of water a day. Up to 400 market gardens extending over a distance of 7 kilometers, will be able to draw water and irrigate crops through an irrigation canal. The establishment of the new pumping system, which is a green alternative to existing diesel pumps, is a part of the Sustainable Energy for Entrepreneurship and Climate Programme run by the non-governmental organization Enda Energie. Study finds electric vans less expensive to run than diesel.
Researchers from Europe’s clean energy advocacy group Transportation & Environment (T&E) have concluded that the total cost to operate and own the average electric van in France, Italy, Spain, Poland or the United Kingdom is 25% cheaper than a diesel-operated vehicle over its lifetime. A survey found that 84% of Europe-based businesses and individuals with vans would consider switching to an electric one but only 3% of vans sold in European countries in 2021 were fully electric. In order to boost the market, which is lagging compared to other types of vehicles, the study recommended European Union lawmakers and member states enact stricter CO2 standards during this decade and the early part of the next one. Police officers in Nevada, United States, help reunite homeless senior with family.
In response to a call, Henderson Police Department officers Sterling Candland and Carlos Chorens found Rose Brazdovic, a 75-year-young frail homeless lady who needed help. The pair quickly got her in touch with a compassionate city community worker, Rochelle Fletcher. In close partnership with Ms. Fletcher, they were able to protect Ms. Brozdovic’s personal finances and connect her with her son in Louisiana, whom she had lost touch with almost 30 years ago. On the day Ms. Brozdovic was leaving Nevada to go live with her son and his family, the two kind officers came to the airport to escort her to the gate. The rapidly growing Polish company Plenty Reasons offers a range of delectable vegan products, including meat-free salami, garlic ham, chorizo, pepperoni and black pudding sausages. Created with proteins from wheat and peas, all its items are free from palm oil. Rafał Czech and Igor Sadurski, founders of Plenty Reasons, decided to start a plant-based company in 2016, with over 2,000 people participating in their crowdfunding campaign. Today, their offerings are available in over 400 stores across Poland, and also in Estonia, Hungary, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and now Britain. Australian veterinarian helps animal-people in Ukraine.
Dr. Lachlan Campbell, originally came to Poland to help care for animal-person companions that accompanied the many arriving Ukrainian refugees. However, realizing he could do more, he started entering Ukraine to help the distressed ones left behind by bringing food, medical supplies, and blankets to overcrowded shelters. Dr. Campbell visited a few centers for the displaced; one is a university in Lviv which houses about 800 people and their companions, including dog-, cat-, reptile- and bird-people. He treated animal-folk with broken legs and burn injuries from bombs and received special military permission to enter Irpin after the Russians had retreated. Dr. Campbell has praise for animal-person rescue groups helping in the area and is grateful for crowdfunding donations of over US$65,000, which have enabled him to provide essentials to affected animal-patients. Our admiration, Dr. Lachlan Campbell, for your selfless service. May God always protect you, the displaced Ukrainians and their animal friends.
