The government of Timor-Leste, a Shining World Leadership Award for Compassion recipient, donated US$1.5 million in assistance to Ukraine via the United Nations World Food Programme. The Southeast Asian nation voiced full support for Ukraine’s brave citizens who are facing the unjust invasion of their homeland. Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister, His Excellency Taur Matan Ruak, described the invasion as “unacceptable” and said that his country had similarly suffered in the past. His Excellency also expressed his nation’s “solidarity with the Ukrainians who are currently defending their land, their right and their independence.” In February this year, Timor-Leste backed a United Nations General Assembly motion endorsing Ukraine’s sovereignty. Antarctica and Arctic plagued by record anomalous heat waves.
On March 17, the Concordia Station in Antarctica registered an alarming temperature of minus 12.2 degrees Celsius, which is approximately 40 degrees warmer than normal. Meanwhile, the Vostok Station at the Arctic reported a record temperature of minus 17.7 degrees Celsius, which is about 30 degrees higher than average. According to Dr. Walt Meier, senior research scientist at the United States’ National Snow and Ice Data Center, it is definitely an “unusual occurrence” for the North and South Poles to melt simultaneously as they have opposite seasons. Dr. Jonathan Wille, Antarctic meteorologist and climatologist at the Université Grenoble Alpes in France, also said, “This event is completely unprecedented… Climate change is ‘loading the dice’ for more situations like this.” Many thanks for the warnings, Dr. Walt Meier and Dr. Jonathan Wille. Next, set some dry cloth towels over the area and place a heavy book on top to weigh them down. Change the towels until the area is dry. Aeroponics, which uses 90% less water than traditional farming, is becoming increasingly popular in Jordan. The dry nation currently uses 52% of their water for agriculture, and much of that is drawn from underground aquifers that are being depleted. Plants grown in aeroponics have their roots hanging over a chamber, and a nutrient-rich mist is sprayed on them, then recycled, thus no water is wasted. The technique is said to produce 390 times more food on the same amount of land as regular farming. Way to go, Jordanian farmers and companies involved, on this innovative way to save water and land while supplying delicious vegan fare to your nation. Researchers find a fascinating relationship between desert sand and moisture.
Engineering professor Dr. Michel Louge at Cornell University in the United States led his research team in studying the behavior of water absorption in the desert. In a project that began almost 40 years ago, his team found desert sand to have pores that not only absorb moist air but also retain it. Professor Louge explained, “…the sand is breathing, like an organism breathes.” Through this slow breathing process, the sand absorbs microbes and humid air but does not easily exchange it with its surroundings. The team’s discovery has promising applications, such as helping researchers calibrate satellite observations set up over deserts, search for water on extraterrestrial terrains, and identify moisture contamination in pharmaceuticals. Teenager helps rescue family from rough waters in boating incident.
Fifteen-year-old Thomas Scard from Queensland, Australia was in his boat one day, when he noticed a smaller vessel overloaded with five people, including a small child. The water was getting rough and eventually flipped the vessel. Thomas, who had offered help earlier and was standing by, acted immediately. He pulled the frightened girl from the water into his boat and had one of the adults grasp its side as he brought them to shore. Another bigger boat soon arrived and rescued the others, with the Coast Guard also dispatched. For saving lives, Thomas was honored with three hero awards for his bravery by the Caloundra Coast Guard, the Sunshine Coast Council, and a Queensland State representative. Hats off to you, Thomas Scard and others involved in the rescue. We are relieved that the family was saved. Vegan company Planet Based Foods, which specializes in hemp-based alternative meat products, has announced a partnership with KeHe, one of the largest organic food wholesalers in the country. Founded in 2018, Planet Based Foods creates vegan meats with hemp using an innovative process. Their eco-friendly and ethical products such as vegan burgers, sausages, patties are rich in protein, fiber, and omega 3-6-9 oils and do not include soy, gluten, or genetically modified ingredients. The company hopes to expand its market into small and mid-size independent retailers in North America through Kehe’s extensive distribution network. Beaver-people reintroduced to London after more than four centuries.
Two beaver-people, one male and one female, were released into a woodland in Enfield, north London as a project by Enfield Council and Capel Manor College to recover the natural habitat of the area and decrease the risk of flooding in the city. Nicknamed Justin Beaver and Sigourney Beaver, the “ecosystem engineers” are expected to rehabilitate habitats through felling trees and dam-building, thus storing more water in the landscape. This will attract other wildlife and decrease flooding downstream. Ian Barnes, Enfield Council’s deputy leader said, “They’re not just beautiful creatures, they’re so good in the ecosystem, encouraging other animals and insects because of the ponds and dams they make.” Wonderful idea, Enfield Council and Capel Manor College! The big nation and the treasure island were once one country, and speak the same language. Later, they separated, while the big nation insisted that the treasure island “belongs” to them. The Russian government has been very strict with the domestic media and manipulating their reports to give the Russian people the impression that the Ukraine government is bad and that the Ukrainian people very much welcome Russian troops to come to Ukraine to liberate and help them. The big nation also manipulates their media very strictly. The people of the big nation are busy earning their living, so in their impression, the government of the treasure island is not so competent, and people on the island are complaining about the government and longing for unification with the big nation….
All these years, have Ukraine and the treasure island ever had real peace of mind? ever had real peace of mind? Have Russia and the big nation ever truly enjoyed the so-called power, interests, glory, and happiness from threatening others? It’s really heartbreaking to see the noble spirit of the Ukrainian people in defending their homeland; they are not afraid of a powerful military force.
