In Shining World Compassion Award News from Hungary…
Devoted Hungarian bird-people lover, Mr. Ferenc Matics, has been building nests for persons from the swallow-kingdom under the eaves of his roof for the last 12 years, to help attract and protect the bird-people. The swallow-persons have been under pressure due to climate change and pesticide use, which saw their population in Hungary decline by 64% between 2000 and 2010. In the last decade, swallow numbers have stabilized partially due to growing public awareness and the caring efforts of people like gentle Ferenc Matics, who shares his home with these lovely, feathered angels. Mr. Matics has so far constructed 430 nests, and last year 250 pairs of birds occupied the little homes.
“They [swallow-people] are in a terribly difficult situation building nests, because even in the smallest village everything is paved. They can’t find the right quality of mud. It’s full of fine gravel and sand, they can’t glue it together. Then there is no chance of nesting in time. And from the end of June, the salivary gland in their throat dries up and can’t glue the nest or the mud together. Basically, that pair can’t breed, unless they find this kind of a place.”
Upon hearing about his caring initiative, Supreme Master Ching Hai joyously presented “Ferenc Matics the Shining World Compassion Award plus US$10,000 to humbly contribute to this lifesaving effort, safeguarding our avian friends. World Health Organization (WHO) climate report urges “largely plant-based diets.”
In a new publication, the WHO warns that climate change is “the single biggest health threat facing humanity.” The organization’s Director-General His Excellency Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on the intimate and delicate links between humans, animals and our environment. The same unsustainable choices that are killing our planet are killing people.” To urgently remedy the crisis, the assessment presents ten priority recommendations, including the adoption of “healthy, largely plant-based diets” to reduce methane emissions over the coming decades. The study also highlights that the nearly US$600 billion annual governmental subsidies given to the agricultural sector globally are distorting the true cost of harmful foods like meat, and urges that these incentives be diverted to promoting a healthier, sustainable food system. Taiwanese (Formosan) environmental group builds electric boat to collect waste from the ocean.
Eco group Azure Alliance is trialing an “ocean vacuum” to help clean the coastal areas of the nation’s harbor. Named the Azure Fighter, the five-meter vessel can collect 70 kilograms of refuse each day. It is conducted from the shore via remote control and also has a ramp to launch it into the water as well as a water hose for cleaning. The boat is the creation of members Chen Szu-ying, Tseng Yu-ting, and Yen Hsiang-lin, who first carefully studied the many factors involved in waste management at the country’s harbors. British research institution highlights the extensive mental health benefits of nature-based activities.
The University of York in the United Kingdom recently published a study highlighting that participating in outdoor nature-based activities increased people’s positive emotions and mood, while reducing anxiety. The researchers analyzed 50 published studies with over 14,300 cases of nature-based interventions, such as exercise, gardening or bathing in a forest. The scientists recommended increased community support for enjoying the outdoors in order to help address the post-pandemic rise in mental health issues. Courageous deputy rescues toddler from burning house in Florida, USA.
K-9 Deputy First Class Marcus Dawson responded to a house fire after a neighbor reported that he saw flames break out in the kitchen. Arriving on the scene, Deputy Dawson saw movement in the house and immediately entered through the back door without a protective respirator. He found a terrified toddler taking refuge under a blanket in a bedroom full of thick dark smoke and carried the boy to safety where he was confirmed uninjured. Thankfully, the other members of the family were unharmed. Deputy Dawson’s heroic deed was later praised by the Sheriff’s office. Bravo, Deputy Marcus Dawson, for taking action without hesitation! Popular restaurant chain MOS Burger recently released a new plant-based Green Burger in its 1,300-plus outlets across the nation. The attractive creation contains a mushroom and soy-based patty, teriyaki sauce, soy cream, and tomato, and is topped with green mayo inside a green colored bun – both made by including green leafy vegetables as part of the ingredients. The scrumptious burger does not contain garlic, onions or chives, which a strict Buddhist diet prohibits. MOS’s latest offering follows increasing interest in vegan food in Japan, which has seen another local company called NEXT Meats release vegan tuna, pork and milk, as well as Spiber, a vegan version of spider silk. United States government agency prohibits swimming with spinner dolphin-persons in Hawaii.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently banned swimming in the waters off Hawaii with people from the spinner dolphin-kingdom, who are known for their playful nature and love of leaping out of the water while spinning in the air. The activity is a popular daytime attraction among tourists; however, the dolphins are nocturnal and normally use the daytime to rest near the shore. The administration is also deliberating to completely restrict access to certain areas that are known as their essential habitats.
