Donor’s conference procures billions of euros for Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons.
Organized by the European Union (EU), the sixth Brussels Conference in Belgium focusing on “Supporting the future of Syria and the Region” raised approximately €6.4 billion for 2022 and beyond. Fifty-five countries and 22 global aid organizations, including United Nations agencies, were represented at the event. The EU pledged over €4.8 billion and since 2011, has donated €27.4 billion to benefit Syrians. Currently in its 12th year, the conflict in Syria has sadly caused an estimated half a million people to lose their lives and 50% of the nation’s population to be displaced. European Commissioner for Crisis Management, His Excellency Janez Lenarčič, shared, “Over 14.6 million Syrians need humanitarian assistance inside Syria alone…” The European Union is a recipient of four Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism, two Shining World Leadership Awards for Peace, and a Shining World Leadership Award for Earth Protection; as well as a laureate of two Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism and Shining World Leadership Awards for Compassion, Unconditional World Care and True Caring. Geophysicist from Japan proposes new method to keep track of time.
Professor Hiroyuki Tanaka, from the University of Tokyo in Japan, has outlined a new way to measure time in an accurate manner. Currently, time synchronization is kept using an expensive network of atomic clocks and GPSs that do not function well underwater or underground, among other places. However, the new method would work using particles called muons that are created when cosmic rays from space regularly enter our atmosphere and interact with it. The system would also function underground because muons penetrate the Earth, and the hardware required already exists and is cheaper than what is currently used for precision timekeeping. Promising news, Professor Hiroyuki Tanaka, on your design for a new cosmic time synchronization system. Ukrainian artists in Thailand paint pictures of beauty and hope.
Yuliia Hvozdetska recently moved to Bangkok, Thailand, to pursue an art career. A week following her departure, her country was invaded by Russia. The shock of the situation caused Yuliia to cease painting for two weeks. However, she then returned to her artwork with a newfound sense of purpose. A newer piece titled “Flowers of Victory” depicts yellow flowers atop a blue surface with a yellow background, evoking the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Yuliia said, “These remind me of Ukraine, remind me of peace … Because I wish we could win.” Another Ukrainian artist in Bangkok, Tetiana Cherevan, commented: “I won’t paint Ukraine knelt down … every Ukrainian heart is broken … However, Ukrainians are people with great history, with sincere hearts.” We are touched, Yuliia Hvozdetska and Tetiana Cherevan, by your powerful artistic expression. Meta-analysis presented in medical journal finds plant-based diets protect against prostate cancer.
A review by researchers in the United States of 31 previous studies was recently published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Urology. It found that men at risk for prostate cancer had a lower chance of developing the condition and better health outcomes when “on full plant-based diet patterns (i.e., vegan, vegetarian, plant-based).” It also found that those who already had prostate cancer could experience improvements in wellness in addition to enhanced health and quality of life through a plant-based lifestyle. The analysis also pointed out that eating more plants improves the environment and benefits animal-people welfare. A young Malawian lady named Tusaiwe Munkhondiya, has established two non-profits, and also fosters 33 children. One of the organizations, You Are Not Alone, was created in May 2021, and assists almost 300 people of different ages with varied schooling needs, as well as support groups for the elderly. The second non-profit, Empowering Young Mothers, helps to encourage young women with children to be successful and has opened a preschool to aid them. Ms. Munkhondiya was inspired to achieve what she has done, because she was also a single mother in a difficult situation, and doesn’t want others to suffer like she did. Plant-powered food companies partner to debut new vegan pizza.
United Kingdom frozen vegan pizza brand One Planet Pizza and Spanish-headquartered plant-based meat company Heura Foods recently collaborated to introduce “The Successor.” It is an innovative, limited edition, frozen, vegan pizza topped with Heura Mediterranean chunks along with red onion, sweetcorn, melty vegan cheese and a generous amount of barbeque sauce on a handcrafted thin, crispy crust. In April 2022, One Planet Pizza launched its products at ASDA, marking the first time its pizzas have been available at a major UK supermarket chain. Heura Foods is planning an “Heura Lab 2.0” for research and development work and to globally distribute its plant-based products. Thank you, One Planet Pizza and Heura Foods, for your collaboration to deliver delicious vegan pizza with minimal impact on the Earth and especially no animal-people suffering. Students 3D print wheels to help tortoise-person.
Children at Prairie Queen Elementary in Nebraska, United States, have made 3D-printed wheels to help Shelly, a tortoise-mom rescued by the non-profit Wildlife Encounters of Nebraska about five years ago, to regain mobility. Upon learning Shelly hadn’t been walking for a year and had five eggs to take care of, students from the school’s 3D printing club immediately decided to help her get back on her feet. They took measurements, made modifications and tried to figure out what design would work best. As the lovely tortoise-person couldn’t be present at all of the students’ testing sessions, they used a cardboard cutout of Shelly. The project took an entire semester. In the final test run, it was clear that significant progress had been made towards resolving Shelly’s mobility challenges.
