The Japanese government, a Shining World Leadership Awards laureate for Compassion, Generosity, and Animal Protection, has donated US$4.5 million to improve the lives of individuals residing in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine that have been adversely affected by conflict. In coordination with the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the new funds will be used to enhance the quality of care in government medical facilities, help people whose freedom has been taken away, assist the injured and sick, provide medical and physical rehabilitation support as well as introduce community-orientated endeavors. Japan has given almost US$56 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine since 2014. The United Nations is a laureate of the Shining World Leadership Award for Humanitarianism and two Shining World Leadership for Lives-Saving-Hero Awards. Study warns of “severe consequences” in climate-tipping domino scenario.
A new study finds that as global warming worsens, the interactions among the ice sheets in Greenland and West Antarctica, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the Amazon rainforest will lower their respective “tipping” temperature as they destabilize one another in a cascade reaction. Led by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, the analysis explains that when the Greenland ice sheets melt, freshwater flows into the ocean and weakens the AMOC. A weakened AMOC means heat coming northward from the tropics is reduced, causing the South Pole to become warmer, thereby destabilizing the Antarctic ice sheets. Alarmingly, the study warns that the ice sheets, which are the domino’s initiators, may reach their critical temperature thresholds at a 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius increase, leading to catastrophic effects for the climate’s stability. A recent paper by the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth University in the United States has determined that the integration of sustainable energy into the nation’s electrical grid would increase its resilience. Their analysis assumes an incremental upgrade and analyzed over 175,000 energy resources, such as power lines, power plants and substations. The report’s authors noted that their findings “should serve as the basis for a bipartisan consensus on the transformation of the electric power grid.” Thank you, researchers from the Thayer School of Engineering, for determining the potential to move the United States electrical system towards renewables in a stable and resilient manner. Amazon natives lived in a sustainable way for 5,000 years.
A group of global researchers, led by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Balboa, Panama, studied the Amazon rainforest in Peru. They came to the conclusion that the natives living there in the past did so in a sustainable manner, without causing disturbances or detectable species loss. The scientists searched the soil layers for tiny fossils that show what kind of plants existed and found that the forest was not “cleared, farmed, or otherwise significantly altered in prehistory.” The study has prompted the researchers to call for a greater integration of indigenous knowledge into current plans to ensure the protection of the Amazon. Pregnant United States woman rescues youngsters from Lake Michigan.
Alyssa DeWitt heroically saved three children who were in the lake and waving their arms for help. Ms. DeWitt quickly got her own three kids out of the water and ran to the end of the pier to get closer to where the girls in the water were. After calling emergency services, the brave mom laid on her stomach and grabbed the struggling children’s hands. Despite the strong waves, she managed to pull each child up over the pier wall. Police arrived soon after she had rescued them and treated them for minor injuries. A hospital checkup found that Alyssa and her unborn child are fine. Ms. DeWitt wrote on social media, “I’m loving my babies a little harder tonight, I’m sure those parents are too. God is good.” We wish the young girls a speedy recovery and God bless you, Alyssa DeWitt, for your incredible life-saving actions. Sea eagles appear again on Loch Lomond after 100-plus years.
In March 2021, a pair of sea eagles, also known as white-tailed eagles, was spotted on the shores of Scotland, UK’s Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve for the first time, since the early 20th century. Recently, they have been observed searching for suitable nesting places which suggests an intention of staying. As one of the largest birds in the United Kingdom, the sea eagles were led to extinction in the nation around 1918, due to hunting, habitat loss and various other factors. However, reintroduction efforts in the 1970s, 1990s and 2000s have brought their population back to approximately over 150 pairs in the UK. Our gratitude to, the wildlife authorities and nature organizations, for monitoring and protecting the pair to ensure they are not disturbed.
