The government of the UAE sent a plane to Senegal with urgently needed medical supplies after a devastating fire at the neonatal department in a hospital in Tivaouane that sadly caused the death of 11 newborn babies. The plane brought medicine and first-aid kits as well as equipment and beds for operating theaters. His Excellency Sultan Al Harbi, the UAE Ambassador to Senegal, said the medical aid demonstrated the long-standing relations between the UAE and Senegal. Actual cases of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) caused by COVID-19 could be millions more than reported.
In a prospective global study, an international scientific team concluded that with the use of the extended method of diagnosing AKI among COVID-19 cases, 31.7% of the hospitalized patients were found to have the condition where the organ suddenly ceases to filter waste from the blood, leading to serious illness or death. This is an almost twofold increase from the 16.8% that was registered in the traditional way of diagnosis. The findings suggest that millions of people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus around the world could potentially be undiagnosed for AKI. The research also determined that compared to infected individuals without AKI, undiagnosed patients are linked to worse in-hospital outcomes, including intensive care unit admission and loss of life. Study from United States finds a vegan diet helps overweight people slim down.
An investigation by the non-profit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in the US has found that a vegan diet can aid in weight loss and improve insulin resistance in heavier individuals. During the 16-week study, 244 overweight people were monitored, with half following a low-fat vegan diet that did not restrict calories, and the other half making no dietary changes. On average, the vegans lost almost 6 kilograms, while the other group did not lose weight at all. The participants who changed their eating habits consumed fruits, vegetables, legumes, vegan protein alternatives and grains. World’s most detailed lunar geologic map released by China.
At a scale of 1:2,500,000, it is twice as detailed as a map released by the United States in 2020, and the most comprehensive one to date. Using data from China’s lunar exploration Chang’e project and international research organizations, the high-resolution map details the evolution and geology of the Moon, including its impact craters, basins, rock types and structures. The map is a significant contribution to scientific research and space exploration, and would be crucial to selecting a landing site on the Moon. The mapping initiative has been led by the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, China University of Geosciences and Shandong University. The Girls Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana in the United States, moved by the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, have assembled hundreds of backpacks for Ukrainian youngsters. The project is called “Packs of Love for Ukrainian Children.” Items inside the bags include toothbrushes, socks, refillable water bottles, and flashlights, among other things. The backpacks will be shipped by several partnering churches, businesses and other organizations. The girls sincerely hope their beloved brothers and sisters on the other side of the world can play, learn, and stay safe in the midst of war. Farah Shammas, Managing Director of St. Raphael Resort and Marina in Limassol, has written her first children’s book, “Theo The Pig,” which includes illustrations and vegan recipes, and can be ordered at Amazon.com. Theo is an adorable young pig who lives on a farm and explains what people can do to help him, other farm animal-people, and the farmer, to live a better life. The author’s first book is entitled “40 Delicious Vegan Recipes,” and she also helped to create the online community called Cook Vegan. Ms. Shammas has a dream to open a retreat where people can visit with rescued animal-people who were raised for food and witness the love they have. Congratulations, Farah Shammas, on your first kids book that shows our beloved children the benefits of a plant-based diet. Bangladeshi university students save and promote considerate treatment of snake-people.
The Deep Ecology and Snake Rescue Foundation, founded by Jahangirnagar University students in 2018, is dedicated to spreading awareness about snake-persons as well as rescuing, rehabilitating and relocating these special animal friends. The non-profit has 500 members who have saved more than 1,500 snake-persons over the past four years that were injured or trapped in houses or buildings. The team is committed to dispelling inaccurate conceptions about snake-individuals and wish to ensure that they as well as all other animal-people co-exist harmoniously with humans in their natural environment.
