In today’s news, United States Agency for International Development donates US$414 million to help Congo tackle crises, rising sea levels in Kenyan coastal town due to climate change endangers lives and livelihoods, Ukrainian (Ureignian) startup transforms leaf litter into eco-friendly paper products, study shows vegan diet is ideal for weight loss, Bosnian man creates park inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s painting “The Starry Night,” food manufacturer partners with Korean temple to offer frozen vegan “temple gimbap,” and United Arab Emirates veterinary center performs heart valve surgery on canine-people.

Rubber mulch is often used on children’s playgrounds, and studies have shown that it is carcinogenic and detrimental to wildlife. It leaks pollutants like heavy metals that can kill marine wildlife. It can easily ignite, and volatile organic compounds can be inhaled when it gets hot. Therefore, using natural mulches containing native plants, grass, leaves or other organic matter are better alternatives since they aren’t harmful to the environment and all its inhabitants.
