The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives in many ways. For example, since early 2020, in order to protect their citizens, many countries have either strongly encouraged or required people to stay at home. In light of this situation, the 65th Eurovision Song Contest, originally set to take place on May 16, 2020 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, was cancelled. As we stand strong together through this challenging time, we will find ways to remain united.

Although, the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 was not held, creative professionals came up with a special modified version called Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light, a live TV program organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and produced by the Dutch broadcasters NOS, NPO and AVROTROS. As suggested by the program’s title, inspired by the 1997 winning song, “Love Shine a Light” by Katrina and the Waves from the United Kingdom, the show was both entertaining and encouraging. The event was broadcast from Studio 21 of Media Park in Hilversum, the Netherlands, and hosted by Chantal Janzen, Edsilia Rombley, and Jan Smit. Its online content was provided by Nikkie Tutorials.

"Music connects, especially at this time. So sit back and enjoy some exceptional performances tonight." The two-hour long program showcased all of the 41 songs selected for the contest this year. In addition, past Eurovision artists appeared as guest stars on live video linkups and in pre-recorded footage. At the close of the event, it was also revealed that the contest will return in 2021, and will take place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light is another example of human beings coming together in times of crisis, helping and encouraging one another beyond nationalities and boundaries. Let our inner Divine Light shine more brightly and guide us toward a more wholesome, loving, peaceful, and compassionate world.
